San Juan River

Located in Northwestern New Mexico, the San Juan river is widely considered one of the most productive Rainbow Trout fisheries in the West. The San Juan River was impounded in June 1962 by Navajo Dam and has since blossomed with trout. The reasons for the river's success are its constant 40-45 degree temperature and the special regulations placed on 3.75 miles of the river directly below the dam. The San Juan is like a giant spring creek, and the insect growth in the river is phenomenal. The enormous number of midges, blackflies, scuds, mayflies, aquatic worms, and caddis flies (in the lower part of the river) produce an average growth of 6 inches per year in young fish! This means that a stocked Rainbow Trout of 9 inches will be a Trophy Trout in only 2 years! The San Juan is the most popular river in New Mexico for guided trips. With little or no fly fishing experience, our clients have a pretty good chance of landing a prize rainbow. The average size of fish caught on the San Juan is 15 inches! The river is productive all year long. It is not unusual for trips to produce fairly consistent hookups of big trout all day long, so get out here enjoy one of the Best Fly Fishing Rivers in the US!

Guided trips include all flies, tippet, leaders, sinkers and rods and reels if needed.   LL Bean breathable waders are also available.

 * Groups of 3 people in a single suite -  3 person trips (with 1 guide) are discouraged because we feel they do no offer the best overall experience and do not allow you a chance to float the river as 3 person trips are wade only, therefore for just an additional $100 per guided day you will be supplied with a 2nd guide for your group allowing you to have the additional benefits of a one-on-one guided experience as well as the normal two-on-one.

Or let us put a package together that works best for you!
We offer many custom packages that include everything from a day off from fishing to sight see, or even a day to play golf at Pinion Hills (rated one of the top 3 public courses in America, and only 30 minutes from our lodge). We'll do every thing we can to make your visit as easy to plan as possible.

We would be happy to arrange dinner at the lodge on check in night if your travel plans allow you to be here in time for dinner.

** Guided trips floats in Colorado will result in a small increase to the over all price (about 25$ per person for each Colorado float) The reason for this is the extra permitting costs as well as the extra cost to the guides for travel.

We offer guided trips on the San Juan River Navajo Dam NM, lower San Juan River Navajo Dam NM,  as well as the upper San Juan River near Pagosa Springs CO, or the Animas river, Piedra Creek, Turkey Creek, Wolf Creek, Silver Creek, the Rio Blanco and the upper East and West forks of the San Juan in Colorado. We also guide the Rio Grande in the Southfork area of Co.   We can customize your package to include guided days on any of the rivers we guide! All Colorado rivers and creeks offer great solitary angling and 90% dry fly action. All rivers or creeks listed are half a hour to a full hour north of the San Juan River and our lodge, but WELL worth the trip!
