The entire Provo River offers some of the best trout fishing
in the Western United States. The middle section of the river, between
Jordanelle and Deer Creek Reservoirs, is a protected wetland habitat. You can
catch large brown trout regularly in its clear riffles and pools. The Middle
Provo River is also an excellent place to learn to fly fish. With good access to
willing trout, one is almost guaranteed success.
For larger, challenging fish, the Lower Provo is the place to be. With many
trophy browns and rainbows lurking in its waters, this is the river to test your
skills on wary trout. Located in the Provo Canyon below massive Mount Timpanogas,
on this part of the river you will have an excellent chance to catch the trout
of your life.
Not much more than an hour and a half from Salt Lake City and less than 30
minutes from the university city of Provo, this river handles heavy angling
pressure with aplomb. No matter how crowded, you can always find a spot where
trout are willing, and some of them are big enough to know better. But they
don't. Often, anglers whose interest is spring skiing beat a path to the middle
section of the Provo, pound the water with but few casts, hook and land a brown
of 14 to 18 inches, say "been there, done that," and go light a
self-congratulatory cigar. The Provo has a way of fish'n'easy.
