Putah Creek Fly Fishing Report – May 2, 2026
Northern California Trout Fishing Report | Putah Creek Fly Fishing Conditions
Flows: 240 cfs
Water Clarity: Crystal Clear
Putah Creek has been fishing well lately, with several quality wild trout showing up for anglers willing to put in the time and fish carefully. During our latest outing, we landed four adult trout over 18 inches, although, as always on Putah, the biggest fish of the day found a way to escape. Landing twenty-inch trout on size 20 flies is never easy — especially when a fish wraps you around a moss-covered rock in heavy current.
Current flows remain low at 240 cfs, which has concentrated fish and increased angling pressure throughout the system. While the creek is still fishing well, slightly higher flows would improve conditions for both the fish and anglers. The water is exceptionally clear right now, making stealth, precise presentations, and proper drifts critical for success.
Putah Creek anglers are finding success with:
- Indicator nymphing
- Tight-line euro nymphing
- Streamer fishing during low-light periods
Indicator fishing and tight lining are currently producing the most consistent action. Focus on deep slots, undercut structure, riffle transitions, and shaded holding water. Fish each run thoroughly before moving on, and make sure your flies are getting deep enough in the strike zone. Small adjustments in weight, depth, and fly selection are making a major difference right now.
Effective fly patterns include:
- WD-40s
- Hogan’s S&M Nymphs
- Lance’s Caddis
- Zebra Midge variations
- Crawdad patterns
- Leech streamers during early morning and evening hours
Streamer fishing with crawdad and leech imitations has produced aggressive grabs during lower light conditions, especially around structure and deeper buckets.
Putah Creek Fly Fishing Outlook
Spring conditions on Putah Creek remain excellent for wade anglers, and the creek continues to produce some of the best technical trout fishing in Northern California. Anglers willing to fish light tippet, small flies, and patient presentations are being rewarded with quality wild rainbow trout.
With clear water and stable conditions, now is a great time to explore new sections of the creek and dial in your technical nymphing game.
Guide Tip: Slow down, fish each piece of water thoroughly, and don’t hesitate to change flies frequently. Sometimes one small adjustment is all it takes to turn follows into eats.
