
FLY FISHING CLASSES
Advanced Technical Dry Fly Fishing Workshop
Do you love the challenge and artistry of searching, finding & stalking a rising trout? If you’ve ever found yourself on a beautiful spring creek or a technical tailwater and wanted to improve your success dry fly fishing to selective trout, this workshop is designed to provide an advanced level of:
- Technical presentation casts
- Aerial mending
- Reading rise forms and feeding behavior
- Understanding entomology
- Line, leader and tippet design and set up
This is fly fishing for trout in its purest form. Spend some time learning the knowledge and techniques it takes to engage in the fun and wonderful chess match with the pickiest of trout. While they will best us at times, this course is designed to tip the odds a bit more in your favor.

Date – Saturday, April 5th 2025
Time - 9am – 3pm (there will be an hour break for lunch)
Where – Meet at Fly Fishing Specialties followed by on the water work at the American River
Cost - $300/person 8 person limit
What to bring:
- 4, 5 or 6 weight fly rod, reel and line combination.
- Waders & Boots
- Hat, jacket, sunglasses anything else needed to be comfortable
- Water and snacks if desired
- Current 2025 fishing license and steelhead/salmon report card
Dec Hogan Swinging for Steelhead Workshop
Dec Hogan is one of the best known and foremost authorities on Steelhead fly fishing in the last 30 years. If you already love or are even interested in pursuing these magical fish with a two-handed rod, and want to gain from decades of guiding and fishing experience, this is a perfect opportunity. With the help of local casting instructor Jason Renfro, Dec will be here to discuss and teach all things Spey with a focus on not just the cast, but what comes next. Get a masterclass on how to swing the fly and present your offerings to the fish we all love. If you’ve ever wondered things like

What do I want my fly to do?
Should I be fishing near the top or deeper?

FLY TYING
Beginner and advanced classes available.
There's nothing more gratifying as a fly fishing angler than catching a fish on something you created. And it's not as hard as you may think. To help get you in the game, Fly Fishing Specialties offers a series of fly tying classes, from beginning thru advanced.
Our Fly Tying classes are held at the shop and scheduled as needed. Our instructor, Dennis Lee, has many years of experience and is a well known accomplished angler. If you would like to attend, please call the shop for dates and to check availability to reserve your spot. Also, once a month we have a free “Tyin 'N' Lyin” session after the shop closes and everyone is always invited. Pizza is provided!
*Required Items: Fly tying vise, thread bobbin, scissors, fly tying materials.

INTRO TO FLY FISHING
Thinking about getting into fly fishing? Learn about the places people go to fly fish, what species are out there to fish for, how much or how little it costs to get started, the right equipment to use, the required knots you should know. You will get to see a great basic trout fly selection, common fly fishing techniques, the mechanics of casting a fly rod, basic entomology on aquatic insects, stream etiquette and more. This “in-store” class answers all the questions that you may have as a beginner. There is also a casting session with some very basic instruction on making a straight line cast. The Intro To Fly Fishing Class is a great way get into the sport of fly fishing without feeling overwhelmed.
Classes are held at the shop typically on the 2nd Saturday of every month and are limited to 10 participants. If you are interested in attending one of the Introduction to Fly Fishing classes, please call the shop at (916) 722-1055 or inquire below.
*Required Items: Knot tying tool and line nippers. Rod/reel are provided for the casting portion of the class.
