Fly Fishing Specialties recently returned from an unforgettable adventure to the Yucatán Peninsula, where a group of enthusiastic anglers joined host Alex Ramirez on a week-long tarpon expedition at the renowned Tarpon Cay Lodge on the ocean in Rio Lagartos, Mexico. This destination offered the perfect combination of pristine waters, world-class juvenile tarpon fishing, and authentic cultural charm.
Each morning began with a short boat ride through the mangrove-lined estuaries where pods of rolling baby tarpon, ranging from 5 to 30 pounds, provided nonstop action. The fish were aggressive, acrobatic, and responsive to a variety of fly presentations—highlighting the importance of accuracy, stealth, and quick reflexes. Everyone in the group had multiple shots daily, with several anglers landing their personal best tarpon on fly.
Under Alex’s expert guidance and contagious enthusiasm, both seasoned tarpon anglers and first-timers improved their casting, hook-setting, and fish-fighting techniques. The camaraderie among the group was strong, with evening gatherings filled with laughter, storytelling, and fresh-caught seafood prepared by the friendly lodge staff.
Beyond the fishing, the trip was a cultural immersion. From exploring the village streets to enjoying local cuisine, the Yucatán provided a warm and welcoming backdrop. The lodge was comfortable and well-organized, offering exceptional service and knowledgeable guides who put anglers on fish day after day.
We’re already looking forward to next year’s return to Tarpon Cay. If chasing silver rockets in crystal-clear water is on your bucket list, this trip delivers in every way. Thanks to Alex Ramirez for hosting an incredible week—we can’t wait to do it again!
