California Delta Fly Fishing Report
By Bryce Tedford – Fly Fishing
Summer California Delta bass fishing is in full swing! Through the summer months, I turn my attention to longer half-day trips (5 hours) chasing topwater largemouth and smallmouth bass. These trips are a great way to introduce new fly anglers to the sport or give experienced fly fishers a fun, action-packed morning on the water.
For Delta smallmouth bass, we fish 4- and 5-weight rods with floating lines and size 6 poppers, working rocky banks and riprap walls. These trips are perfect for beginners because the fish are plentiful, aggressive, and a blast to catch on light tackle. While the fish are generally smaller than largemouth, they fight incredibly hard for their size. We can even stop for coffee or ice cream midway through the trip, which has become a favorite part of the day for many of our guests.
For Delta largemouth bass, we use 8-weight rods with floating lines and 2/0 poppers, targeting heavy cover along rock walls, tule edges, weed beds, and submerged structure. These trips are a bit more technical, requiring more accurate casts and stronger hook sets, but the reward is the chance to catch much larger fish and experience explosive topwater eats.
After your trip, I’m happy to recommend some of my favorite local lunch spots to cap off a great morning on the water.
All rods, reels, flies, tackle, snacks, water, and soft drinks are included. Just bring a valid California fishing license, sun-protective clothing, and a positive attitude, and we’ll take care of the rest!
