Striped bass fishing on the Lower Sacramento River has remained consistent despite the recent Northern California heat wave. Cool water temperatures and stable late-summer flows continue to provide excellent conditions for both fly anglers and conventional anglers targeting Sacramento River stripers.
There have been plenty of salmon boats on the river in recent weeks, but pressure has spread out since the August 1 Upper Sacramento River salmon opener. The combination of migrating Chinook salmon and increased salmon fishing activity has pushed many striped bass toward the banks. As a result, we’re finding quality fish holding tight to shoreline structure throughout the day, with feeding windows occurring periodically rather than continuously.
Water clarity remains good throughout most of the Lower Sacramento River, although a few sections with eroding banks are creating stained water for several miles downstream. Water temperatures have stayed in the ideal range for striped bass until around 3:00 p.m. each day, making early mornings through early afternoons the most productive time to fish.
Best Fly Fishing Techniques for Lower Sacramento River Stripers
Most of our success has come on heavy sinking shooting heads that allow anglers to reach fish holding deeper along current seams and bank structure. Intermediate (I-Line) setups have also been producing throughout the day for anglers willing to cover water and actively search for feeding fish.
Fly selection has been especially important. Darker and flashier baitfish patterns have been producing well during low-light periods early and late in the day, while more natural olive, white, and tan patterns become increasingly effective once the sun gets high. Don’t be afraid to rotate fly colors and retrieve speeds until you locate active fish.
August and September Striper Fishing Outlook
The Lower Sacramento River striper fishery should continue to provide excellent opportunities throughout August and into September. Stable flows, cool water releases, and an increasing number of salmon moving upriver create ideal conditions for fly fishing striped bass. As temperatures begin to cool and fall weather arrives, expect fishing to remain consistent with periods of exceptional action.
