Rancho Seco Lake July 7, 2025
Rancho Seco Lake in southern Sacramento County is a small SMUD reservoir that sits in the shadow of Rancho Seco, the former nuclear power site. It is known as a location for large Largemouth Bass.
The fishing is fair to good. Until the bass start feeding on the surface, fish deep. A crawdad pattern like Papi Chulo up against the rock wall could or the edge of the weeds could be deadly. If you want to fish float and fly style, the gray Dead Drop Minnow is recommended. If you understand the concept of the Ned Rig, try using an orange Geezus Lizard. The fishing gets best when the dragonflies come out. Bass will mimic trout by launching out of the water to eat one. Try using a Solitude Dragonfly.
The weeds are getting thicker in some areas. On the light side, use a seven weight rod. An eight weight would be ideal.
