Lake Almanor Fly Fishing Report
Lake Almanor continues to fish well despite the two recent storms that rolled through the area. Many brown trout have wrapped up their spawn and are moving out of the tributaries, feeding aggressively to bulk up for winter.
Mornings have been productive running a floating line with a 12-foot leader and stripping #10 Wiggle Tails in orange or rust, or #10–12 Floating Leeches in brown or rust. Floating pond smelt patterns are also still producing solid results.
As the day warms up, switching to #8–10 Balanced Leeches in burnt orange or white paired with #12–14 midge patterns in black or red has been effective. #14 Callibaetis patterns are also finding fish through the late morning and afternoon.
Be sure to check road conditions before heading up—this last storm left a light dusting of snow in some areas.
