Lower Sacramento River Fly Fishing Report – September 9, 2026
he Lower Sac fished great this week. Flows have started to drop and are sitting around 7,000 CFS.
That little cold spell we had for a couple of days got the baetis moving, and the fish responded in a big way. We found fish loaded up in the flats, including some really quality trout willing to eat little flies. Bring your A-game and be ready to fish 5X.
Once the sun came back out, we started seeing good midday caddis activity followed by evening baetis hatches. The pattern has been pretty simple: find the bugs and you’ll find the fish. More importantly, we’re already seeing some of the bigger fish getting active and feeding consistently.
On the salmon front, fish are definitely moving into the system. A lot of salmon pushed quickly on the rain, and we’re starting to see fish showing up in the lower stretches of the Sacramento. We haven’t seen any redds yet or fish staging to dig, but we did see salmon rolling through town this week.
That’s exactly what we want to see. The egg bite is coming, and we’re getting excited.
